Workshop Description:   An introduction to the Art of Puppetry

Ms. Bauer is a Drama Educator and Curriculum Specialist in the Bay Area in California.  She has directed over 30 shows, as well as performed in over 30 plays.  She's done Standup with Lipshtick and is a Professional Singer. Currently she is directing "Pinocchio" for the City of Santa Cruz, and will direct "Peter Pan" during the summer.  Her background and experience spans over 30 years in education and theatre,  with diverse populations.  She has observed the critical importance of movement and interpersonal activities with children to set the learning.  Her reform platform in education encompasses many modalities, with creative teaching at the top.   She emphasizes the importance of having creative teachers and curriculum in the classroom to foster a sense of flexibility and freedom in all aspects of education and learning.

Workshop Description:     What to Do Before and at the First Rehearsal.   The first rehearsal can not only cause anxiety for those actors who think that they must act during the first rehearsal, but may also start bad habits that reinforce bad acting. Script analysis is probably the most important part of acting. Learn how to analyze scripts before the first rehearsal and how to conduct a first rehearsal with specific techniques that insure that you will act well without anxiety.

Ms. Brewer, a San Francisco native, is a New York and San Francisco trained actor, writer, director and producer. FLANARE is her third solo show. Her second is SCHOOL DAYS and her first, THE GRIT.  She has written plays since 1978, and began writing and performing solo pieces in 2002. She has performed various roles with Mystic Bison Theatre including, The Woman in PURGATORIO, Martha from WHO’S AFRAID OF VIRGINIA WOOLF, Linda from PLAY IT AGAIN SAM, Arlene from MURDER AT THE HOWARD JOHNSON’S and Paulina from DEATH AND THE MAIDEN. She has her own radio show podcast, sftheatrescene.blogspot.com on which she interviews theatre professionals in San Francisco and the Bay Area. She has recently finished filming her first screenplay and is working on a new screenplay.

Workshop Description:  An hands-on intro to both Special Effects and Standard Makeup procedures.
Professor David  has been Professor, Drama Department Chair and Artistic Director for the Knox Performing Arts Center since 1994 and has directed and produced over 40 productions at CCC.    In the Bay Area, he has directed several shows at San Francisco’s New Conservatory Theater including Del Shore¹s (Dharma and Greg, Will and Grace, Queer as Folk, Touched by an Angel)  play Southern Baptist Sissies.   Clay also directed National and International theatres and festivals at Edinburough Scotland Fringe Festival,  Jerry Rojo Environmental Theatre,CT,  Poculi Ludique Societas, Toronto, Canada, and  theSan Francisco Fringe/Venue 9 Theatre California Travel Troupe of San Francisco.

Workshop Description:  Whether your goal is to perform and audition more naturally or play Improv as a performance, this workshop will break down the scene to it's core elements and invite you to find the ease at which you can project and perform. Games will be used to nurture creativity.

Mr. Hayes has 12 years experience as Improvisor, teaching and coaching both Corporate classes and performing groups. He is currently a member of the group Crisis Hopkins (www.crisishopkins.com) a group that performs nationally and locally. I received my Improvisational training at the University of Wisconsin Oshkosh, Improv Olympic West (L.A.) Theater Sports (Atlanta) as well as years of workshops, classes and one on one with such renowned instructors as Charna Halpern, David Razowski, and Matt Besser.    A member of Actors Equity, SAG and  AFRTA is also a voice talent  with 12 national ABC spots,voice of Bi Lo grocery stores commercials to his credit.

Workshop Description     Auditioning for the Musical Theatre:  Make that 16 bars work for you -  ace the job interview of our profession!     This workshop prepares singing actors for the musical theatre audition process. Auditions are the job interview of our profession, and this workshop takes participants through the process in detail:
• What an audition is and what it is not      • How to choose, edit and prepare material     • How to tailor your audition to the show being cast    • How to work with an accompanist  • Audition etiquette   • How to deal with nerve     And, of course: effective communication with an audience.  This includes focus, stage presence and how to create believable characters when singing.     Take advantage of this opportunity to work in a supportive environment, receive professional coaching on audition pieces, and advice on finding and preparing new material.  Bring at least two memorized songs. 
Ms. Johnson is an accomplished singer/actor with over 25 years performing experience in the Bay Area. She is a church and concert soloist, and has performed numerous leading and character roles onstage in musical theatre and operetta, as well as working with many Bay Area theatre companies in leading non-singing acting roles.  Shelley is also a stage director and teaches an acting approach tailored specifically for singers. Audition workshops have been sponsored by NATS ( National Association of Teachers of Singing) , Theatre Bay Area, SummerSong Vocal Institute, and Broadway by the Bay theatre companies. She has done workshops for local community colleges. In addition she has collaborated with voice teachers in group master classes, coaching singers on role preparation, text analysis, stage presence, communication with an audience and audition preparation.

Workshop Description:  Discussion of playwrighting elements including creating characters, conflict, plotlines and how to write  strong dialogue.

As a playwright, Ms. McCarty has had her work produced at theatres throughout the Bay Area, Los Angeles and Chicago.  Ms. McCarty’s book “Defining Form & Other Plays” was published in August, 2008.  .  For information on her plays, and free monologues, visit kgmccarty.com.   Her full length musical, RIVETS will be performed Aug. 28 - Sept. 27 on the SS Red Oak Victory in the Rosie the Riveter National Park and her work MAIDS & MATRONS will premiere in July at Contra Costa College.  She currently serves as Artistic Director of Galatean Players Ensemble Theatre.

JR (JOHN) MOROCCO:  THE ART OF PYROTECHNICS/SPECIAL EFFECTS

Workshop Description:  Drawing on his professional work as a pyro technician and special effects artist, JR will provide an intro to the craft.

Mr. Morocco  is a Special Effects pyrotechnician of National acclaim. He owns and operates his own special effects company and regularly works on Film, TV, Concerts and Stage projects in Northern California. He is the "go to" FX guy for most major venues in NorCal including Shoreline, Compac arena, San Jose Center for Performing Arts, and the Flint Center.   He has been on the DISCOVERY CHANNEL (“Mythbusters” and “National Geographic”) and CNN / local news as a pyrotechnic consultant.     He has provided award-winning lighting for professional dance companies including Dimensions Dance  in the Bay area and the premier performance of the Koslov Ballet in Sacramento.
He teaches Theater Technology for the Drama dept at Contra Costa College and is the technical director for all events at the Performing Arts center.

                 Bay Area Musical Theater Workshop

Workshop Description:  From entrance to exit, learn the basics of auditioning for musicals in a fun and encouraging environment. Instructors Lee Ann Payne and Jill MacLean of the Bay Area Musical Theater Workshop bring their extensive performance and coaching experience to performers of all levels.  Participants should be prepared to sing a full song memorized & to bring sheet music in the correct key. Ms. MacLean earned her MFA in Musical Theater from San Diego State University. In New York, she was a professor at Marymount Manhattan College for three years teaching Musical Theater Techniques, Scene Into Song and New Musical Developmental Readings, a course she designed for which she commissioned and directed original pieces from emerging lyricists, librettists and composers. She has directed numerous ten-minute musicals for New York University's Undergraduate Musical Theatre Writing Program, and was the Directors Lab Assistant at Lincoln Center Theater for five years. As an actor, Jill has performed in the Bay Area, New York and regionally and is a member of Actors' Equity Association.  Jill is currently on the Young Conservatory faculty at American Conservatory Theatre, a Teaching Artist with Berkeley Repertory Theatre, and a proud member of the Magic Theatre Artists Lab.
Ms. Payne earned her MFA in Musical Theater from San Diego State University and was a professor at Marymount Manhattan College teaching Musical Theatre History. She has spent the last several years as a performer/choreographer based in New York City and has performed in professional venues across the country. She is on staff with Zohar School of Dance as the “Tap Teacha!” and was most recently seen at The Baker’s Wife in Into the Woods with Broadway By the Bay, and soon will be choreographing Kiss Me Kate with Sunnyvale Community Players. Lee Ann is a member of Actors’ Equity Association as well as an Associate Member of the Society of Stage Directors and Choreographers

Workshop Description:    A taste of the professional training offered at The Clown Conservatory:  An introduction to clown characters and their relatives, the family of Commedia dell'Arte.  We will explore the routines that these characters work in as well as the details of the characters themselves.  Students will have the opportunity to work with high-quality Commedia half masks.

Jeff Raz, Founder and Director of The Clown Conservatory at S.F. Circus Center, has performed nationally and internationally with circuses and theaters including Cirque du Soleil, The Pickle Circus, Song Circus, Lincoln Center Theater, Vaudeville Nouveau, Dell'Arte Players, Berkeley Repertory Theatre, Marin and S.F. Shakespeare Festivals, TheatreWorks and Marin Theater Company.  He has written 11 plays, directed many others and taught in many university, conservatory and high school theater programs.  The Clown Conservatory has trained some of the top young clowns who are currently performing around the world.  Jeff will play the lead character in Cirque du Soleil's "Corteo" in Japan this Summer.


KATIE RUBIN:   WRITE YOUR LIFE- A SOLO SHOW MAKING WORKSHOP

Workshop Description:  Carl Jung taught that the human psyche comprises a myriad of different voices, characters, or "archetypes."  In this workshop, we will delve into some of your dominant and perhaps, less than dominant archetypes to discover the story your psyche is already writing!    In this class, you will begin to develop a solo (or multi-actor) performance about you, something you are passionate about, or you and your relationship with/to that thing about which you are passionate.  You have the show within you already- everyone does!  Now, let's dig for, and discover it!

Ms. Rubin began her career as a writer/performer at Amherst College with her first original piece, PartyBoobyTrap.  Her second play, Avoiding Less Blue, was produced through the 2000 New York Fringe Festival.  Insides OUT! was her third work for the stage and her first solo show received a 9 week production at The Sacramento Theater Company, and has toured throughout the Country Currently, she is in development of her second solo show, tentatively titled Indecision Collision.  In addition to performing and writing original material, Ms. Rubin also works as a stage, screen, and voice over actress, and as an acting, writing and vocal coach.  Most recently, she played lead roles in The B Street Theater’s production of Wit and Rabbit Hole, The Sacramento Theater Company’s A Christmas Carol, and Foothill Theater’s production of Urinetown.

Mr. Shroder is the director of the Northern California ComedySportz High School League.  We teach high school students about improvisational theater and more specifically ComedySportz.

Workshop Description:  Take control of the audition experience!  In this workshop we'll tackle the basics of putting together an effective audition. We'll discuss monologue selection (Shakespeare and modern), audition etiquette, headshots & resumes, and what to do when you get the callback. Students who would like to perform their monologue for feedback should come to the workshop with a memorized piece of any genre (one minute or less).  No songs or original material, please.  

Mr. Travisano is on the artistic staff of the San Leandro Players, where he has directed productions of "An Ideal Husband," "Tartuffe," "The Importance of Being Earnest," "Suddenly Last Summer," and "Arms and the Man."   As a freelance director his work has been seen at Bus Barn Stage Company, Douglas Morrisson Theatre, Actors Ensemble of Berkeley, Palo Alto Players, and Dragon Productions Theatre Company.  As an actor he's appeared onstage at Willows Theatre Company, Bus Barn Stage Company, TheatreFIRST, and elsewhere. He is also a dramaturg, dialect coach, and acting coach.

LEONARD PITT AND JAMES DONLON: FLYING ACTOR STUDIO

Workshop Description:  With mask, movement, and improvisation we'll explore the fundamentals of movement theatre and understand how it differs from naturalistic theatre. It's all about stylization, knowing how to think spatially, visually, and gesturally. Do less and express more. Economy is the key. The concepts are simple. Getting it is work.

Mr. Donlon has been a master teacher and international performer since 1970. He has been on the faculties of acting schools such as The American Conservatory Theater, The North Carolina School of the Arts, The National Theatre Conservatory-Denver Center, The Yale School of Drama, UCSB, and UCSD, and has presented residencies with special institutions like El Teatro Campesino, Mexico City 's Bellas Artes, Prague's national Academy of Performing Arts (AMU), and Ringling Brothers, Barnum & Bailey Circus Clown College where he taught Tony Award-winner Bill Irwin. He has been a film movement coach for Oscar-winners Javier Bardem, Kathy Bates, and Frances McDormand, as well as Benjamin Bratt and David Strathairn. James is the only physical theater artist ever invited to perform with legendary San Francisco street mime Robert Shields of CBS' The Shields & Yarnell Show. James has performed his original work throughout North America, Europe, and Latin America to critical acclaim. The New York Times describes his theatre as "an extraordinary blend of skill and lunacy."
Mr. Pitt  has been performing and teaching for over forty years. In 1963 he traveled to Paris to study mime with Etienne Decroux, later becoming his assistant for two years. In 1970 he opened a school of physical theatre in Berkeley CA, attracting students from around the world.  He has studied mask theater and carving in Bali and performed with the Balinese in their villages and temple festivals. He has presented his work internationally including England, Spain, Holland, Russia, New Zealand, Brazil, and Australia. He was a founding member of George Coates Performance Works, has received Chicago's Actor of the Year Award for his solo work, and was movement consultant for Jurassic Park and motion-capture specialist for the films Dragonheart and Three Wishes.  In 1986 Leonard co-founded Life On The Water, a contemporary performance space at Fort Mason, San Francisco. ANDREA WEBER & DAVE MAIER:  STAGE COMBAT, RAPIER AND DAGGER

Workshop Description:    (Limited Class Size:  12)    Hands on exploration of Rapier and Dagger stage combat excercises.

DAVE MAIER is a Full Instructor of Theatrical Combat with Dueling Arts International and is currently teaching combat related courses at Berkeley Rep School of Theatre.  He has also taught at UC Santa Cruz, Cal State University East Bay, St. Mary’s College of California. He has assisted Master Teacher Gregory Hoffman in classes at the American Conservatory Theatre’s MFA program. In his role as Outreach Coordinator for Berkeley Rep School of Theatre he has taught Acting and Improvisation classes to adults, and he has designed and implemented theatre arts based curriculum for Middle and High schools through out the Bay Area.   Dave has composed fights for over 80 professional productions.  He is currently the resident fight director for The Shotgun Players (Berkeley) and The Thrillpeddlers (San Francisco).  His work has been seen at American Conservatory Theatre, Berkeley Repertory Theatre, SF Playhouse, La Jolla Playhouse, San Jose Rep, California Shakespeare Theatre, Shakespeare Santa Cruz, Magic Theatre, African American Shakespeare Co, and Berkeley Opera, among others.  He has been nominated for several Bay Area Drama Critics Circle awards and has won the award for his work on Culture Clash’s Zorro In Hell (2006) and The Pillowman (2007).
ANDREA WEBER is a director, choreographer, teacher, and performer working in both dance and theater.  She has worked professionally in the Bay Area  with Berkeley's acclaimed theater company, The Shotgun Players and San Francisco theater's Word 4 Word.  She is also a certified teacher of Stage Combat with Dueling Arts International and has directed fights at CCC and elsewhere.   In 2000 she received the Bay Area Theater Critics Circle Award for Best Choreography for a Play for Caryl Churchill's "The Skriker". Ms. Weber's recent shows include "More Stories from Tobias Wolffe", " Bat Boy! The Musical", "Three Musketeers", "Angel Face", and her own original productions:  "Night at the Fights" and  "MotherLand:  Uprooted" for the CCC Drama Department.


HOW TO ENROLL

To participate in the CCC Drama Theater Festival each student will have to enroll in a drama course at CCC.  The course you will enroll in is  DRAMA 220-7177.

Step 1 :  Complete an Admissions Application
You must file an application for admissions online. 
Go to the college website at  www.contracosta.edu

Click on ENROLL NOW and then click on the ONLINE ADMISSIONS link which will take you directly to the application.  Scroll down to the very bottom of the page to find the link to ‘Begin Application…’.   

Please note:   If this is the only class you are enrolling for you do not need to take an assessment test. or attend an orientation.

During the admissions process you should receive an email giving you instructions on how to retrieve your login information on WebAdvisor after 24 hours.  If you don't get the email go to the WebAdvisor main menu and click on a link to UserID Help.  You will find a link to “What’s My UserID?” where you will be asked to enter your complete SS# and last name to retrieve their UserID.

Step 2 : Register for either
           Drama 220 - 7177 (You will get 1 unit)  or
  Drama  820N (Student receives no credit)

Click on ONLINE SERVICES and then click on the link for ONLINE REGISTRATION where you will find the link to “Use WebAdvisor Now!”.

You will need to know your Student ID Number & Six digit birthday (e.g. Sept. 05, 1985 is 090585)

Your Web Advisor username is the first initial of your first name, your last name and the last three digits of your Student ID number and your initial password is your six digit birthday (mmddyy). You will be prompted to change your password after your initial log-in. The new password should consist of 6-9 characters (including at least one number and/or one letter).

                      Example: jsmith567 username 080282 password

After you are logged in, click on “Current Students”.  From the Current Student’s Menu, click on the “Register for Sections” link in the lower-left-hand corner of the page under  “Registration”.  Click “Continue to Register for Sections”.  Choose the first registration option: “Express Registration…”.  Enter the section number 7177 and choose 2009SP from the “Select Term” drop-down menu, then click “Submit”.  You will be taken to the final step of the online registration process where you will be prompted to select an action for your preferred section.  Select “RG – Register” from the “Action” drop-down menu, then click “Submit”. 

Print the registration confirmation on the next page and bring that with you to the festival.

Current high school students will need a Concurrent Enrollment form which is signed by your parent/guardian and your school's administration.

During our Theatre Festival, students enrolled in the Festival will have the opportunity to perform in the CCC Talent Showcase on Friday, May 1 at 7:30 p.m.

We are looking for pieces that are 10 minutes or less in length  Be creative!

You are encouraged to bring props/costumes for your performance, which can be stored prior to the show in the green room and makeup rooms.  We have stools, small tables, chairs & benches available for performers.     A piano and microphone will also be available.
