1940s Kimball, West Virginia… In the midst of them is a black coal miner Harold Mourning, fighting to form a collective labor union in a segregated town. But first he has to overcome rumors of infidelity, murder, and family secrets. Will he be able to lead the strike or
become a martyred organizer?
In The Midst of Them, a new play, is inspired by his grandmother's stories as a coal miner’s daughter. It depicts the way of life in a coal mining town centered around many universal themes: betrayal, escaping reality through alcoholism, wanting to belong, redemption, and the power of forgiveness. The full-length play is not a musical, however, it has original lyrics and a coal miner's cadence. There is
an undeniable religious undercurrent throughout the entire play: "For where two or three are gathered together in My Name, there am I in the midst of them"- Matthew 18:20
